Improve Problem solving and critical thinking skills through MATH WIZ
This curriculum development project not only helps students improve their math skills, but also provides them with crucial soft skills that can benefit them greatly in their future. Apart from improving students’ problem solving skills and critical thinking skills, this form of curriculum can also help students improve other soft skills such as communication and collaboration. Students can work together on problem sets and develop ideas on how to solve these more challenging problems. Additionally, students can develop determination and perseverance due to the challenging nature of the problems forcing students to try multiple different methods to finally achieve the solution.
Highlight of the project by Arnav Ashok:
The main content involved in this form of curriculum is a combination of critical thinking skills and mathematical concepts. Rather than using a formulaic approach to solving problems, many of the problems require a combination of multiple concepts in a creative manner to solve the problem. Although these problems are significantly more challenging, they allow students to gain a passion for math through persevering through each problem.
Why I chose this project:
I chose to do this project after seeing the impact that math had on my life and seeing how the critical thinking skills from these more challenging problems could be used in the real world. As a result, I wanted to spread this knowledge of math and also improve other people’s problem solving skills due to the ability for these skills to help solve important real-world problems. Additionally, I found that when math problems are formulaic, it can be hard for students to gain a passion for math. However, in having math problems be more challenging and require problem solving skills, it can give students more satisfaction in solving problems and as a result allow them to gain a passion for both math and problem solving which they can use to solve crucial real world issues.

My name is Arnav, and I have been participating in math competitions since I was in 4th grade. These competitions utilize problems that use a combination of math concepts and problem solving skills in their solutions. I was hooked to the idea of solving problems that were more problem solving based rather than just applying formulas, which is why I am so passionate about math and want to pursue this project. Throughout high school I was able to place 6th place nationally in Math kangaroo, and qualify for AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination) which is awarded to the top 5% of test takers in AMC 12 ( American Mathematics Competition). In addition to math, I play chess and code in my free time. I also enjoy going on walks in the morning in order to clear my mind. In regard to sports, I like to play basketball or tennis with my friends.
